Skating on Schlachtensee
I went ice skating in Berlin today 🙂 Beautiful super thick super hard ice. I had the whole lake to myself except when a dad asked me if it was safe for his daughter to hop on for a photo opportunity.
To my Berlin friends: Don’t try this unless you know what you are doing. There are some sections where you will just fall straight through the ice. There’s a picture in my video below of a hole which I stuck my hand into to confirm if the water was cold … it was indeed very cold!

Tempelhof heat
Now that we’re into some cooler weather, I thought I’d point out the day some idiot (me) decided it was a good idea to go test out his new inline skates at 34° C! This was the hottest day of the year so far, and I think I’ll go find some place with shade or water next time 🙂 Whizzing around on searing hot asphalt doesn’t lend itself well to staying cool 😉 Thanks to Robinson and Anna for a great day out though 🙂

Bandy
I made my first attempt at playing Bandy. For those of you who aren’t aware of what Bandy is, it is a sport which is similar to regular hockey, but is played with 11 players on each side on a huge soccer field sized ice rink with very low boards. The stick is much shorter than a regular hockey stick and you use a small rubber/cork ball instead of a puck. We were only playing in a very small area, more like pond hockey for bandy, but it was very fun. I haven’t quite figured out how you are meant to take the ball off the other person yet as I kept trying to poke check people, but failing as the darned stick was too short!
The photo below is of my lovely new friend Tessa, a Kiwi I met here in Oslo who joined me at Frognerstadion for skating and our unexpected try at Bandy.

Frozen saft!
This is a lesson in why you should always pack hot water when travelling outdoors in Oslo 😉
This was a yummy bottle full of forest berry flavoured saft (Norwegian drink flavouring stuff, kinda like cordial) before leaving home; 60 minutes later and it became a saft slushy!
The photo was taken on Kringlevann.

Skating on Sognsvann
After having a such a terrific time out ice skating the night before, I headed back to Sognsvann in the morning to try out the ice during the daylight. There was a little more snow and the surface had roughened up a little, but still an amazing days skating in the great outdoors. It is terrific being able to catch public transport from my home all the way to such an amazing chunk of ice.

Sognsvann evening skate
After being hospitalised with a head injury this evening (I thought it would be fun to walk into a cupboard door), Morten and I decided to go for an evening skate on Sognsvann on the outskirts of the city. We were greeted with beautiful smooth ice interspersed with the occasional snow dump.
The local fire fighters had been doing some sort of training on the ice and had cut a big triangle out of the ice.
