  • Holes at Toko Mouth

Here are my holes from the mid-late 1980’s … actually, they’re not meant to be holes, the adults just didn’t get it. What I was trying to do was to create a barrier of sand so big that I could sit on the beach and watch the waves crash around me. It never worked very well (duh!) but I did build some rather large barriers in a vain attempt to stop the ocean. Wasted youth :p

Adrian Moore checking out my Tamiya Super Sabre Quick Drive. That thing still works, albeit I bent a suspension arm by jumping it off a two metre drop in 2008.

This must have been some time around 1992 as that’s when I got the bike I used with the yellow helmet in the picture. The yellow shovel and blue rake were still in use 20 years later by other kids. The electronic set died at some point, the shin guards were donated to Kings High school around 2008 and all of the chocolate got promptly eaten.

This must have been sometime around 1987, as it was the first radio control car I ever owned. A year later I got a Nikko car, then the Super Sabre shown in another picture. The Asterix books is still around. The Entertech watergun has long since died (who the hell thought making an electric water gun was a good idea???). The rugby ball’s rubber deteriorated and it got thrown out. The Remington pellet gun at the front lived a long life, but was eventually thrown out – it was hideously dangerous and probably shouldn’t have been given to a small kid to play with, it was one step short of a full-blown BB gun. I think the green cassette tape in the backround is probably still in use by my nieces. The last I saw of the fishing tackle box, was it being used by my Dad; hopefully he’s upgraded to something better by now 😉
  • QE2 park in Christchurch

Family trip to QE2 park in Christchurch some time in the 1980’s.

My first experience driving a go kart. Unfortunately my feet couldn't touch the pedals so Dad needed to ride with me!

  • Mount Cargill Scouts

Yes I was a Cub Scout – don’t hold it against me :p

This is us on a trip up Mount Cargill in Dunedin, New Zealand. This would have been some time in the 1980’s, not sure of the exact year though.

  • Fishing

This was the last time I went fishing. As you can see, the last time I went fishing was quite successful 🙂 I caught 17 fish in total. Unfortunately the adults ate all of my fish, I never got to have any 🙁

  • Avalanche boulder

This is a good lesson in why not to trust your elders! Dad and I saw this avalanche above the Hermitage at Mount Cook so we decided to go climb up on it and take some photos. Dad picked me up and dumped me on top of this giant snow ball. I said “Dad, I don’t think this thing is stable, if it rolls over I’m going to die”, to which he responded “don’t be stupid, this avalanche has been here for months and there is no way that thing is going to fall over”. Once I got off, I gave it a shove and it proceeded to roll about 200 m down the hill!!!
