  • Happy Birthday Grandma

My dear grandma died almost 21 years ago, but would have made it to the ripe old age of 99 if she was still with us today. She always said she didn’t want to grow too old, because growing old wasn’t much fun. So it’s not sad that she is gone, but I do miss her.

It wasn’t until recent years that I realised how much of a rock she was in my earlier years. Whenever the going got tough, she was always there for me, always supportive, always kind. She was able to provide support to me, that I now realise was absolutely critical for getting me to where I am today.

When I was 5 years old, I was in a very serious car crash, and I went to live with my grandma and pop for many weeks afterwards, while my parents were busy tending to my brother. I couldn’t walk initially, as I apparently had “bruising of the joints” (I had no idea why I couldn’t walk at the time, but my wonderful Auntie Vera was able to fill me in about it many years later). After a few days, my grandma told me that I needed to start moving, but I didn’t want to because it was too difficult. So she got all the adults who had come to visit, to come into the hallway and cheer me on while I tried to navigate my way along the hallway. I felt dejected when I only made it to the first door. But grandma managed to make it feel like I had conquered Everest. She took something which was depressing and turned it into a positive achievement to make me feel better. With my new found zest for regaining the ability to walk, I quickly came back right and was tearing around the house like a 5 year old should.

Of course, she then needed to deal with an over energized five year old who was bored out of their mind, since I wasn’t able to attend school there and I had no friends in the area to play with. So she took me on super long walks in nature. Initially she seemed to be having a lot of fun walking me around, but after a few days I think she started to regret trying to keep up with an energetic five year old. I remember her saying “wouldn’t it be fun if pop drove us to the top of the hill and we just walked down instead of up?”, but I just responded with “no, walking up is more fun”. She then pointed out that she was old and couldn’t keep up, so walked from the top down. I will always cherish those times spent with her. I remember feeling intensely lonely, but she was able to hold the darkness away until I could return to school again.

Thanks to Brianna for waiting around whilst I launched myself off the Kawarau bridge late last year πŸ™‚ I was totally relaxed, even when standing on the edge. But that feeling of freefall puts me into severe panic. I think I need to do this a few hundred more times to get used to the feeling πŸ˜›

    Cub Uniform

I thought I’d gained weight, but I tried out my Cub Scout uniform from 30 years ago, and it still fits!!!

  • Ted

I rescued my best childhood friend, Ted, from my parents place. According to my mum, I was very upset that he had no pants, so my mum made pants for him and gave them to me for Christmas πŸ™‚ Later on, she made him the little Greatest American Hero suit which he is still wearing today πŸ™‚

His official name was Hot Dog, but he was always known as Ted.

We went on many adventures together. He get lost in Arthur Barnetts, and wanted to be like the guy from the Greatest American Hero, so I used to throw him across the room so that he could fly.

  • Pissing on Marc Ellis

A long time ago (1999’ish) in a land far away (Dunedin, New Zealand), I was getting horridly drunk at a well known bar called the Captain Cook Tavern with my friend Matt. After WAYYY too many bourbon and Coke’s, we eventually left The Cook and wandered a few blocks until we saw this big old church with a line outside. The people at the door told us to come on in and I was like “dafaq would we go in there for?”. Matt wandered in, so I tagged along too and was surprised to see they’d converted this old church into a night club called “The Mission” (later called The Monkey Bar)! After refilling with bourbon and Coke and making a jack arse of myself in a failed attempt to pick up women, I made my way to the toilets.

I was taking a slash in the urinal when an extremely drunk dude who looked kinda familiar stumbled in. He shoved me out of the way mid-flow and proceeded to hurl in the urinal. There was a guy to my left, a guy to my right, and I sure as hell wasn’t about to pee on them. And since I was so drunk, stopping mid-flow was not gonna happen, so I just proceeded to pee on the drunk guy. I was still mid-flow when he turned his head and said “thanks mate!”, then barfed a little more.

It wasn’t until that moment he turned his head that I realised I was peeing on well known Kiwi celebrity Marc Ellis. He was back at the bar again drinking beer after that. You’d think being that drunk, having vomit on yourself and smelling like someone elses urine might get you kicked out, but apparently not πŸ˜‰ I guess they don’t tend to throw out famous people no matter how drunk they get!

Marc Ellis is famous for being the creator of New Zealands National Nude Day, and is also a famous rugby player, who holds the world record for the most tries scored in an international rugby game when playing for the New Zealand All Blacks against Japan in 1995. He has also been in trouble with the police for offering prizes for streaking at sports events and tricking people into thinking the volcano on Rangitoto island was erupting, by setting off 600 kg of explosives on it. He can now add being pee’d on by me to his list of achievements in life πŸ™‚

The church is now being used by the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra. I wonder what other crazy activities will occur in the place in the future.

EDIT: In response to this tweet, BjΓΆrn Johansen responded with “So you pissed on a celeb in the church where the symphony orchestra is? I think you just won life.”

Marc Ellis – on the set of the Sportscafe TV show. This was one of my favourite TV shows back in the day.
