  • Safety

The Beelitz-Heilstätten military hospital I went to during a recent cycling trip is a good example of where some common sense is, well, sensible! Most of it is totally safe, but there are some areas which looked horrendously dangerous. If you go to the area, please watch out for collapsed roofs, dodgy railings and bad staircases. All of the staircases we used seemed okay, but we were very careful making our way around as one bad step could be fatal.

  • Beelitz-Heilstätten theatre

Welcome to the glamorous Beelitz-Heilstätten lecture theatre. Despite many years of abandonment, I think this place still has better insulation and seating than most of the lecture theatres I remember from my years at university.

  • Beelitz-Heilstätten graffiti

I’ve been to quite a few abandoned places now. But Beelitz-Heilstätten is definitely the biggest. It’s also one of the most remote as there’s not a lot else in the area. I think the size and remoteness has resulted in a lot less vandalism and graffiti inside the buildings. There were some interesting creations though, including instructions to trespass (check) and to teach children to worship Satan. The Satan comment was painted at the front of a large grand lecture hall.

  • Gabel

Context: Betahaus cafe intercom system was calling out (in English) when meals are ready. All I could hear was “chicken garble garble bla bla”, so I strolled on up to let them know it was inaudible.

Me: “All I can hear is garble”
Cook: “Gabel? Hier ist eine Gabel!”
Me: “No, GARBLE, I can’t hear you!”
Cook: “Ja, ja, hier ist Gabel!”
Me:”No, GARBLE. The audio is bad, no one can hear you.”
Cook: “Ja! Gable ist hier. Siehst du?”
    me: “Fuck”
    Cook: “?”
me: “Was ist das?” (points to meal on counter)
Cook: “Das ist Frank” (meaning it’s Frank’s meal)
    Me: “Danke schön :)”

    My tummy is rumbling 😛

  • Eclipse of the sun

I’ve always wanted to see a total eclipse of the sun. Heck, a partial one will do. It turns out the sun is harder to photograph than what one may imagine 😉 The photo below was taken at 1/2000 of a second at F16.

  • Akershus festning

I visited Akershus festning, a medieval castle built in the 1290’s in Oslo, Norway.
